Self Storage Tips from Salisbury Route 50 Self Storage

Whether you’re moving, decluttering, or storing business inventory, a few smart steps can help you make the most of your unit.
Here are our top self storage tips to keep your belongings safe, organized, and easy to access.

       Before You Move In

                      1. Choose the right unit size

  • Make a quick inventory of everything you will store.
  • Use our Unit Size Guide
  • or ask our manager for help choosing the best fit.
  • If you are unsure, it’s often better to go slightly bigger so it's easier to move around inside.

2. Decide between climate-controlled or drive-up

  • Climate-controlled units protect against temperature and humidity swing, these are ideal for electronics, furniture, artwork, or documents.
  • Drive-up units are perfect for frequent access or heavier items you will unload from your vehicle.

3. Label everything clearly

  • Use durable labels on every box. Write on multiple sides so you can identify boxes even when stacked.

                       4. Use quality boxes and supplies

  • Avoid using worn or mismatched boxes. We sell sturdy boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, and covers designed for long-term storage.

Packing Tips

1. Pack smart: Heavy items on the bottom and light items on the top

  • Stack boxes with heavier ones at the bottom to avoid crushing lighter items.

2. Disassemble furniture when possible

  • Remove legs, headboards, or shelves to save space. Keep hardware in labeled bags taped to the item.

3. Protect mattresses and upholstery

  • Use protective covers to keep fabric items clean and safe from dust.

4. Avoid overpacking boxes

  • Boxes that are too full can burst or become unstable.

5. Leave space for airflow

  • Stack boxes slightly away from walls to allow ventilation and reduce moisture buildup.

Organizing Your Storage Unit

1. Create an aisle

  • Leave a small walkway so you can reach the back of your unit easily.

2. Store items you will need most often near the front

  • Keep seasonal items or frequently used tools within easy reach.

3. Make a simple map

  • Draw a quick diagram or take a phone photo of your packed layout, it will save time later.

 While You Store

1. Use pallets or shelving

  • Elevating boxes off the floor prevents potential moisture issues and improves airflow.

2. Lock it up securely

  • Use a high-quality lock (available at our office). You keep the only key.

3. Avoid storing prohibited items

  • No flammables, explosives, corrosives, or food. If in doubt, check with our manager.

Bonus tips for moving day

  • Give yourself time to fuel up, if you are renting a truck, check your checklist, and confirm movers or helpers are on schedule
  • You will need a lock, photo ID, your first month’s rent, and a one time $24 Admin fee at move-in. Locks are available for purchase at the office.
  • Note your unit number, gate code, office phone number and facility hours.
  • Before you close your unit, take a few photos to remember where everything is located.
